Fletcher Comer, Avondale Mills Official, Dead From Shot


Alexander City, AL, July 9 – – funeral services for J. Fletcher Comer, 59, textile executive, who was found fatally wounded in a room of his home here last night, were held from the residence here this morning.


Burial and a memorial service were scheduled for 4 PM in Birmingham.


Mr. Comer was found fatally wounded last night by members of his family, who rushed to him after hearing a shot. He died in 10 minutes without regaining consciousness.


He was vice-president of the Avondale Mills Corporation, one of the South's largest textile mill concerns, and was a son of the late Governor B. B. Comer.


Members of his family said he had been in poor health for several months.


He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Helen Brown Comer; one son, Braxton Bragg Comer III, Alexander City; two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Ruby, Maysville, KY, and Miss Dora Comer, Alexander City; three brothers, Donald and Braxton Bragg Comer [Jr.] of Birmingham and Hugh Comer of Sylacauga, AL; five sisters, Mrs. Frank Lathrop, Mrs. Craig Smith, Mrs. Frank Nabers and Mrs. Herbert Ryding, all of Birmingham, and Mrs. Morley Buck, Port Dover, Ontario, and two grandchildren, Fletcher Comer, Alexander City, and Edwin Ruby, Maysville, KY.
