U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1861 and taught in the city schools of Coldwater, Michigan. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain in the 5th and 9th Regiments, Michigan Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867 and commenced to practice law in Coldwater, Michigan. He was prosecuting attorney of Branch County (1868-72), a member of the Michigan State Senate (1873-74), served as regent of the University of Michigan (1870-77) and also director of the Coldwater school board for six years. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
