U.S. Congressman. He graduated in the first class of Trinity College in 1827, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Marshall, Michigan, in 1833. Upon the admission of Michigan as a State into the Union in 1835, he was a delegate to the State constitutional convention. In 1837, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. After his term, he was a regent of the University of Michigan, (1837-44) and founded the public-school system of Michigan. He was a member of the Michigan State board of education (1850-52), editor of the Marshall Expounder and a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1842-46).
