IN LOVING MEMORY. Shadows of a long life gather around the veterans of the late unpleasant conflict of the Sixties, and rapidly indeed, do they pass from the scenes of earth to the unknown beyond. Mr. William J Carter, who has been for many years a familiar figure in Appling County, was born in September 1834, died at the home of his son Mr. B C Carter on Monday, the 8th day of May 1916. He was the son of David Carter, one of the pioneer citizens of Appling. At the age of 22 years, the deceased was married to Miss Elizabeth Deen, of Appling County, which union was broken by her death several years ago. To Mr. and Mrs. Carter there were born six children, all of whom survive them, being Messers, B S, S L and I D Carter of Appling County, W L and Elzie Carter of Jesup, Henry L Carter of Chipley, FL. Mr. Carter enlisted in Company B, 54th Georgia volunteers in 1862 and served his country well and faithfully in the never-to-be forgotten struggle, the War Between the States. He was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church for nearly 50 years, and did his best to live a consistent and exemplary life. About three years prior to his death he suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he had never recovered, and was confined to his bed for about three weeks just prior to his death. In drawing the curtain o'er the place where his body now reposes, our prayers ascend to Him who sitteth on the Great White Throne in humble supplication, and we pray the all wise and loving God to so direct us, that when the ebbing tide of life can be stemmed no longer, and we must cross the dark river, our landing may be as safe and secure as we trust has been the landing of our departed friend and brother.
