William Emmett Ballard was born in Mankato, Jewell County, Kansas November 22, 1904. In 1917 his parents moved to Douglas, taking up a homestead in the Box Creek-Dry Creek area where they engaged in the sheep business. Except for three years in the Salt Creek oil fields, Emmett spent his entire life on the ranch. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Douglas and an avid advocate of aviation, at one time holding a farm Pilot's license.

In October, 1932 Emmett and Elisabeth Schick were married. To this union four sons were born, William E. of Newcastle, Kenneth of Lander, Don of the family home and Richard of Americus, Ga. Surviving him are his wife, four sons, five grandchildren; three brothers, Carroll and Melvin of Douglas, Daniel O. of Cody and a sister Mabel Dixon of Torrance, Calf.
