Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. His Civil War service began with a commission of 1st Lieutenant in Company H of the three-month regiment 4th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on April 20, 1861. After his muster out on July 21, 1861, he re-enlisted, and was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on October 17, 1861 Promoted to Captain on February 12, 1862, he led his men through the rest of the year, participating in the September 17, 1862 Battle of Antietam. On December 8, 1862 he was promoted to Colonel and commander of the 179th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, which he would lead in operations around Suffolk, Virginia in the spring of 1863. Honorably mustered out of service on July 27, 1863, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "great gallantry in storming and taking Antietam Brigade, September 17, 1862 under Major General Burnside".
