US Congressman, US Senator. Served in the Delaware Militia during the Revolutionary War. Represented three different Pennsylvania Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1791 to 1807. First served as an At-Large Delegate from 1791 to 1793, then represented the 2nd District from 1793 to 1795 and from 1803 to 1807, and finally the 4th District from 1795 to 1803. Elected as a Senator from Pennsylvania to the United States Senate, serving from 1807 to 1813. Served as President Pro Tem of the Senate during the 11th Congress. He was the grandfather of Pennsylvania Congressman James Xavier McLanahan.
