US Senator. He attended Drury College and the University of Missouri in Columbia, received a law degree from Washington University of St. Louis in 1897, was admitted to the bar, and practiced in Springfield. A Republican, he served as Greene County Prosecuting Attorney from 1903 to 1907. He remained active in politics as a member of the state Republican Committee, and in 1920 he was elected to the US House of Representatives; he served one term, 1921 to 1923, and was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1922. He was a Republican Presidential Elector for the Coolidge and Dawes ticket in 1924. From 1925 to 1929 he was the US Attorney for Missouri’s Western District. In 1928 he was a successful candidate for the US Senate, and he served one term, 1929 to 1935. From 1931 to 1933 Patterson was Chairman of the Senate Committee on Mines and Mining. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1934, losing to challenger Harry S. Truman as part of the Democratic wave generated in response to the Great Depression. Patterson resumed practicing law in Springfield, and also served on the Missouri Appellate Judicial Commission.
