U.S. Continental Congressman. As a planter, he was very successful in the management of extensive rice plantations, on the Santee River. Entering politics, he served as a member of the South Carolina House of Assembly, (1751-57, 61-63, 65, 68, 72). He also was a member of the First and Second Continental Congresses, (1774-76) and a member of the first South Carolina State General Assembly in 1776. He was unable to sign the Declaration of Independence because of illness and while en route to his home, died from a stroke. U.S. Congressman Thomas Lynce Jr. was his son.
