Civil War Confederate Army Officer. He graduated sixth in the 1859 class of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York and was posted with the United States Topographical Engineers. During the Civil War he first served as a Lieutenant of artillery in the Confederate army before joining the staff of Major General Gustavus W. Smith. Commissioned Major on August 16, 1862. On April 8, 1863 he was promoted to command of the Stuart Horse Artillery with the cavalry corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, as replacement for the recently killed Major John Pelham. On February 16, 1864 he was promoted to Colonel and ordered to Lieutenant General John Bell Hood, where he was assigned to the command of the artillery in Lieutenant General Stephen Dill Lee’s corps. During Hood's invasion of Tennessee he was mortally wounded near Columbia, Tennessee during an artillery exchange and died near Ashwood, Tennessee on December 5, 1864.
