Businessman. An early settler of Skowhegan, he was a successful surveyor, and operated with his sons Abner and Philander a partnership that purchased land and cut timber. He was also involved in local government as a Justice of the Peace, Town Selectman, and state legislator. His sons became among the wealthiest people in Maine, and another son, Stephen, served in the US House of Representatives.
