MOWEAQUA - John Mathias Jr., 69, of Moweaqua died 11 a.m. Monday (July 21, 2003) in St. Mary's Hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Seitz Funeral Home, Moweaqua, with Pastor David Beerbower officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Assumption, with full military honors by American Legion Post 370 of Moweaqua. Memorials: CAMP (Central A&M Parents) or Mount Pleasant Church of God.

Mr. Mathias was born Jan. 18, 1934, in Dollville, the son of John and Iva Miller Mathias. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Church of God. He retired in 1996, after 42 years as a mechanic and bus driver with the school district. He served in the Army for two years. He loved sports, was a scorekeeper and officiated for several years. He played fastpitch and slow-pitch softball and was an avid bowler with many teams in the area. During his retirement, he enjoyed camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He married Phyllis Moss on Nov. 4, 1967, in Macon.

Surviving are his wife; son, Kevin and wife Shannon and grandchildren, Shawn and Rebecca, all of Moweaqua; sisters, Irma Barringer of Decatur; Mary Alice Mathias and Doris Mathias, both of Assumption; Lila Caulk of Pana; brother, Lyle Mathias Sr. of Nokomis; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
