John Temple
Birth: 1632
Death: Mar. 10, 1704

Politician. The inscription is no longer legible, but a sign in the churchyard reads: "The burial place of Sir John Temple, Speaker of the Irish Parliament, and nine members of his family down to 1791. The family seat was moved to Broadlands before the superstructure was completed." John Temple was born in Ireland, but educated in England, where he was called to the bar. In July 1660, he was appointed the Solicitor General for Ireland. The following May, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Carlow and, that September, became the Speaker of the Irish Parliament. In October 1679, there was talk of making him the Attorney General for England, but he remained in his post until the Tyrconnel Rebellion forced him to take refuge in England. His name was included on the list of persons proscribed by the Irish Parliament, and his estates (worth 1,700 per annum) were sequestered. However, after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 which brought William and Mary to the throne, he returned to the Emerald Isle, where he served as the Attorney general until May 1695, when he retired to his estate at East Sheen, just South of London. He was married to a Dublin girl called Jane Yarner, with whom he had seven children. The eldest was Henry (1673 - 1757) who became the first Viscount Palmerston. The third Viscount, who was born at Broadlands, near Romsey in Hampshire, and is buried in Westminster Abbey, was Liberal Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1855 to 1858, and again from 1859 to 1865. (bio by: Iain MacFarlaine)
