U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Yale College, in 1814, he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1825-34). In 1835, he was elected as a Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress and as a Whig to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1843. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1846-47), Secretary of State of Massachusetts, (1848-51), Massachusetts State bank commissioner, (1853-55), Mayor of Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1859 and again a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1861-62).
