US Congressman, US Senator, Delaware Governor. He served as Delaware's Associate Judge of the Court of Common Pleas from 1793 to 1806 before being elected as Governor of Delaware, an office he served in from 1814 to 1817. He was elected as a Federalist to represent Delaware as an At-Large delegate in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1822 to 1823. He was then appointed as a Senator from Delaware to the United States Senate to fill a vacancy caused by the death of Senator Nicholas Van Dyke, serving from November 8, 1826, to January 12, 1827.
