Delaware Governor. Self-educated, he entered the military with an appointment as Lieutenant in the 2nd Company of the Delaware State Militia, serving (1807-08). He also served during the War of 1812, as Captain of a Company in the 8th Regiment, Delaware Militia. After the war, he was appointed as Delaware Sussex County justice of the peace, serving (1812-17). In 1829, he was elected as a Democrat-Republican the 20th Governor of Delaware, serving until 1833.
After his term he served in the Delaware State Senate, (1835-39), was a judge of the Delaware Supreme Court, (1844-47) and a member of the Delaware State Constitutional, in 1852.
