Delaware Governor. A self educated man, he was a successful farmer, served as a Captain in the 3rd Brigade, Troop of Horse, Delaware Militia and was Sussex County's Justice of the Peace, (1797-1805). He was also Sheriff of Sussex County, (1808-12), served in the Delaware State House, (1816-17, 35-36) and was an Associate Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Sussex County, (1817-29). In 1840, he was elected as a Whig, the 24th Governor of Delaware, serving until 1845. During his tenure, banks were allowed to defer cash payments and Delaware was aligned in the U.S. Fourth Judicial District. After his term, he was appointed superintendent in charge of supervising developments made in Sussex County's Broad Creek, in 1846 and served until his death at age 77.
