U.S. Senator. He graduated from Harvard University in 1787 and became a successful merchant in foreign trade. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1800-01), and a member Massachusetts State Senate in 1804. In 1808, he was elected as a Federalist to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of John Quincy Adams, serving until 1813. In 1822, he was again elected to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harrison Gray Otis, serving until 1826. He then retired from public life and lived in New York City, until his death.
