U.S. Senator, Massachusetts Governor. After graduating from Harvard College in 1776, he enlisted in the Continental Army and served as a clerk for an artillery regiment during the Revolutionary War. After his military service, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1778 and established a successful law firm in Boston, Massachusetts. He was a member of the State constitutional convention in 1788, a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, (1788-89, 1808) and the U.S. Attorney for the district of Massachusetts, (1789-96). He also was commissioner to England, (1796-1803), Charge d’Affaires at London, (1803-04) and a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1806-07). In 1809, upon Governor Sullivan's death, he was appointed as a Federalist the 8th Governor of Massachusetts, serving until 1810. In 1813, he was elected to the United States Senate as a Federalist to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James Lloyd, serving until 1816. After his term, he was active in the administration of Harvard University, until 1820. He died in retirement at age 68.
