Charles is a son of William D. Meriwether and Mariah K. Winston. He was born and raised in the Logan County, KY and Clarksville, TN area. On 27 Dec 1897 he married Daisy M. Whitfield in Clarksville; they were the parents of two sons, Charles Jr. and William DOuglas Meriwether. Before 1910 the family moved to New Orleans, where Charles' sister, the noted journalist Elizabeth "Dorothy Dix" Gilmer resided.
