Delaware Governor. He became a successful businessman after taking over and running the family agriculture business. He also served as director of the Queen Anne’s Railroad and was president of the Georgetown Farmers’ Bank. Entering politics, he was a member of the Delaware House of Representatives (1857-59) and served in the Delaware State Senate (1864-68). In 1871, he was elected as a Democrat the 34th Governor of Delaware, serving until 1875. During his term, legislation was enacted that gave married women additional legal rights and hotelkeepers were granted the sole license to sell liquor. Also a law was constituted that banned non-citizens from fishing in the state. After leaving office, he returned to his previous business interests until his death.
