US Congressman. Elected as a Whig to represent Massachusetts' 9th District in the Twenty-Fifth and two succeeding Congresses, he served from 1837 until his death in office. Hastings was born in Mendon, Worcester County, Massachusetts, into a distinguished family whose ancestors had arrived in America in 1634. His father was Congressman Seth Hastings. After graduating from Harvard University in 1817, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820 and began practice that year in Mendon. Prior to service on Capitol Hill he was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1828) and the State Senate (1829 to 1833). Hastings died at a resort in Red Sulphur Springs, Virginia (now West Virginia), where he had gone for health reasons. There is a cenotaph in his memory at the Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
