Daughter of Thomas and Sarah Fladger Godbold. Sarah married William Evans on June 19, 1827.

"Sarah Ann Godbold was born April 25,1807 in Marion, SC. She was the daughter of General Thomas Godbold and Sarah Fladger. Her lineage was a composite of the earliest settlers of the region and included the Godbold, Fladger, and Keene families of England , the Bakers of Virginia and the Albemarle, the French Huguenot families Horry and Garnier, and the Lewis family from Barbados.

On June 19,1827 at the age of 20 years she married William Evans and became his partner for life. She and William had known each other since childhood and their families were connected for generations by friendship and marriage. William had immense responsibilities for his age and she shouldered the task of managing the household and the care of Williams brother Nathan III, sister Elizabeth, and Williams younger half-sister Martha Wayne who she raised as a child of her own.

The first of their nine children, Charles Gamewell Evans was born May 30, 1828 at the original Oak Hall and died March 4,1829. Their other children, seven girls and two boys, were also born in the old Manor House and were raised to maturity. All of the girls were educated at Floral College and six of the seven married. The third child Sarah Catherine was a victim of an epidemic of Typhoid fever that swept the district during the great unpleasantness and died in 1862. The oldest son James Hamilton Evans was a graduate of North Carolina University married after serving in the Confederate Army but had no children. The younger son William Evans was a student at Emory and Henry, withdrew at the beginning of hostilities and enlisted as a private. He stayed for the duration, was commissioned from the ranks, promoted to Captain and was present at the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox.

Their daughter, Julia Rosa Evans married Capt. CSA Duncan McIntyre in 1858 and their first child, Mary Require McIntyre was born in 1860. Rosa and the child returned to Oak Hall for the duration and gave birth to an son Duncan in 1862. When the mother sickened and died in 1862, Sarah raised the children as her own. Sadly, Mary Require died in 1868 at age 8 and Duncan died in 1872 at age 10.

At the end of the war William Thomas Evans married Lucy Stith from Wilson, NC. Shortly after the birth of their daughter Virginia Davis Evans in 1869 the mother died and Sarah raised the child as her own. When Virginia Davis Evans married Henry Gasque, they made their home at Oak Hall and all of their children were born there.

Sarah Ann never faced an empty house. General Evans half-sister, Martha, was raised in the home by Sarah until she married Alexander Murdock of Beauty Spot and had four children. Alexander died first, then Martha, leaving the orphaned children and their inherited plantation in the custody of William and Sarah until they became of age.

William Evans died at Oak Hall in 1876 with Sarah Ann at his side. She continued to live at Oak Hall until she died in 1885 surrounded by her extended family. She was buried beside William in the family plot.

Sarah Ann Evans was a strong woman. She tirelessly supported William with all his aspirations and responsibilities and clearly contributed to his financial and political success. Their relationship was one of mutual respect and admiration and their goal was the welfare of their family." WBC12/03
