Politician, War Personality. Served as a Member of the Massachusetts State Senate in 1798, and 1805, and Governor of the Michigan Territory from 1805 to 1812. Also served as a Colonel in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and as a General in the United States Army during the War of 1812. At his surrender to the British in Detroit, Michigan, in 1812, he was found guilty by a court-martial of cowardice, neglect of duty, and unofficerlike conduct, and was sentenced to die. President James Madison accepted this decision but remitted Hull's sentence. Hull died on November 29, 1825.
