MAGUIRE.-July 1, H. S., husband of Lena Maguire. Funeral, Sat., 8:30 A. M., from residence, 2024 N. Park Ave. Solemn mass of requiem at Our Lady of Mercy Church, 10 A. M. Relatives and friends invited to attend. Int. private.

Hugh was born in Enniskillen is the largest town in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the middle of the county, between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne.

Prof. H.S. Maguire was a man ahead of his time, his horses were humanely trained and newspaper reports that they performed worldwide for numerous kings, two places mentioned were in London's Hyde Park at the Crystal Palace. His horse "Mascot" was one of these "Educated Horses" and there is an online article written about them in a 2015 Russian Equestrian e-magazine which Google will offer to translate and has a great description of his act and abilities and states that Mascot remained mentally sharp even at the age of 30.

Newspapers.com has the earliest article about him in 1896 and the last in 1916 and pictures of Hugh indicate his health was in decline before he passed in 1919, so Mascot may have outlived his trainer.

There is even a Pinterest page devoted to Educated Horses with Mascot in his own section. He was valued at $50,000 and the family photos of him are dated August 1913.

In 1897 his horse "Mazeppa", who was also valued at $50K, was killed in a train wreck, the train company was sued and Prof. Maguire's lawsuit netted him approximately $13K after legal fees. Using an inflation calculator $13,000 in 1897 is the equivalent in purchasing power of $366,218.38 in 2017.

Mazeppa's case was even cited in a medical journal, Journal of Comparative Medicine and Surgery, Volume 19, free online in google e-books.

The best description of Prof. Maguire's theory of training is a four page article with cover pictures of Mascot. This Chautauqua Manager's Association pamphlet is available online in the University of Iowa digital collection (http://digital.lib.uiowa.edu/cdm/compoundobject/collection/tc/id/45856/rec/1) and well worth a read.
