James West Bryan was born 1805 in New Bern, Craven County, NC, the youngest of 3 known surviving children (2 boys/1 girl) born to James D. Bryan (1769-1806) and his wife, Elizabeth Heritage (1783-1842). His older brother was the noted Congressman and Episcopalian layman, Hon. John Heritage Bryan.
He was the paternal grandson of Capt. John Council Bryan (1742-1807) and Elizabeth Oliver of New Bern; and gr-grandson of John Bryan & Ann Cady of Craven County. On his mother's side, he was the maternal grandson of John Heritage & Rachel Whitfield of Craven Co, NC.
John was well educated and graduated UNC in 1824, opening a law practice in New Bern. He was 26-years old when he married 17-year old Anne "Anna" Mary Washington on January 19, 1831, daughter of wealthy planter John Washington & Elizabeth Heritage Cobb.
The couple resided New Bern, where they became parents to 3 known surviving children:
* James Augustus Bryan (1835-1923)
* Washington Bryan (ca. 1847-1927)
* Laura Ann Washington Bryan (1837-1868)
Two other children -- Henry and John - died in infancy before 1835.
James West Bryan became a respected attorney and Whig legislator of New Bern,and represented Carteret County in the North Carolina State Constitutional Convention, 1835, and State Senate, 1835-1836. He was a trustee of the University of North Carolina, 1836-1856, and a member and vestryman of Christ Episcopal Church, New Bern
John died on September 28, 1864 at age 59. His wife of 31 years passed the very next day, on September 29, 1864 at age 50.
Their son, Washington Bryan became an attorney in Raleigh. He married his 1st cousin, once removed, Mary Bryan Winder.(1857-1886) and had 2 children. His entire family is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, but there is no record he is buried there as well.
