Author. He was a noted Valencian novelist, poet and essayist. He is best remembered for his books "Nosaltres els Valencians," "Babels i Babilònies," and "Diccionari per a Ociosos." He was famous since he wrote in the native Valencian language and was a Valencian nationalist. During the Spanish Civil War, he was age 13 when his father was imprisoned for 8 months for his politics. He read constantly and was self-taught. In 1947 he graduated from the University of Valencia with a degree in law, yet practiced for only a short time. After leaving law, he published his first essay within a year. He received a doctoral degree in Catalan philology in 1985. From 1946 to 1956 he co-edited the magazine "Verb" with José Albi. His writings covered politics, the figure of the intellectual and his reflections on art and culture. He published essays in a host of magazines and newspapers. One of his most famous essays was the 1962 "We, the Valencians." In 1975 he was awarded the Catalan Literature Honor Award. In 1978 he survived a heart attack. Many of his essays were political, which alienated others. Some of his writings were censored by the government. On September 11, 1981, his home was partially destroyed after two bombs exploded. He was not injured, but no one was ever arrested. In 1983 he joined the University of Valencia as a professor to teach the subject of Language History. The same year he was distinguished with the Gold Medal of the Generalitat of Cataloniaand. Between 1949 to 1954, he published four books of poetry. In 1987 he published his collection of poetry in "Seven Books of Verses." Throughout his career, he received many awards and honorary degrees. Posthumously, he was awarded the High Distinction for Cultural Merit of the Generalitat Valenciana. His grave was among others, which were vandalized on September 13, 1997. In 2007 his house and the monument dedicated to him at the culture center were vandalized.
