US Congressman. He graduated from Kenyon College, Ohio, in 1837, studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of law in Alexandria, Virginia. Relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, in 1850, he continued the practice of law and also engaged in literary pursuits. In 1855, he was elected as the candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress, through Thirty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1861. He was again elected as an Unconditional Unionist to the Thirty-eighth Congress, serving from 1863 to 1865. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 48.
