U.S. Congressman. Born the son of U.S. Congressman James Wilson I, he graduated from Middlebury College in 1820, was a member of the New Hampshire Militia serving (1820-40) and rose to the rank of Major General. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1823 and commenced to practice law in Keene, New Hampshire. He was a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives (1825-37, 40, 46) and surveyor general of public lands in the Territories of Wisconsin and Iowa (1841-45). In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth and Thirty-first Congresses and served until he resigned in 1850. He was appointed one of the commissioners to settle private land claims in California, serving (1851-53). He then was again a member of the New Hampshire State House of Representatives, serving (1871-72).
