He was born in Visby, the historic capital city of the Baltic island of Gotland. He immigrated in the early 1850's through port of Buffalo, NY, possibly as a Swedish sailor who jumped ship. He and his German immigrant wife Elinor Fabel, had their first two children, William and Helena, in Buffalo before moving to Chicago, which at the time had a very large Swedish population. They lived in the Englewood neighborhood at 6338 S. Peoria St a few doors down from their eldest daughter. He worked as a watchman at the nearby Union Stockyards for many years and died of colon cancer.
