Stephen was the 4th of 7 surviving children born to Isaac T Barnett and Margaret Jane Kelsoe. He appears in his father's household on the 1880 Blount Co AL census. Sometime before 1900, he and two younger brothers, William Columbus Barnett and Isaac Montgomery Barnett, made their way to Tulare CA where they worked on the farm of Elvis Coplantz. They appear in that household on the 1900 San Joaquin Co CA census.

On 4 April 1905, Los Angeles CA, he married Catherine Eleanor Rivers in the presence of George M Huff and Miss Mabelle Meloy by Minister of the Gospel, Frank De Witt.

In 1910, Stephen was living with his wife Catherine at 851 West 34th Ave, Los Angeles CA. His wife was born in Nevada.

Stephen's death certificate # 3199 was filed in Los Angeles Co CA. Informant was his wife, "Mrs Elinor Barnett, 851 W 34th St." His occupation was listed as Livery Business.

After his death, his wife continued to live at that residence as recorded on her census record in 1920 when she was living alone as a widow, and in 1940 after she had remarried to Louis Deharpporte. Mr Deharpporte was living at that address when he died in 1948 and Catherine was still living there when she died in 1949 as evidenced on their death certificates.

This cemetery is very near the location of their home address which is now part of the campus of the University of Southern California.

At the time of this bio posting, [18 Jan 2017] there is another Catherine, memorial # 6120959, linked as his wife. This is in error and effort is being made to have the link removed.
