Musician. Known for "Bentonia style blues," Owens was a guitar player and singer and childhood friend of Skip James, an American Delta blues singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter. Owens worked as a farmer in Bentonia and operated a juke joint as a side business. His music was documented by music historians, David Evans and Alan Lomax. Owens never left Bentonia until the last 10 years of his life. During that time, he played across America and Europe. He often played at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia with his longtime partner, harmonica player Bud Spires. In 1995, the two of them appeared in a TV commercial for Levi's which was filmed at the Blue Front Cafe.
