US Congressman, Entrepreneur. He was a United States Representive from the State of New York. He was born to Frederick and Clarissa "Clara" Hawkins Johnson as Frederick Avery Johnson in Fort Edward, New York, on January 2, 1833. He was educated locally and attended the local common schools before attending and graduating from the prestigious Glen Falls Academy in Glen Falls, New York. He later moved to New York City, New York, where he engaged in banking pursuits and the wool business. He eventually moved to Glen Falls, New York, and continued his banking pursuits before entering politics and being elected and serving a term as the President of Glen Falls, New York. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative John Hammond (1827-1889), on March 4, 1883. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served New York's 18th District (Forty-Eighth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1883, to March 3, 1885. After his term in the United States Congress had expired he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative Henry Gordon Burleigh (1832-1900), on March 4, 1885. He then ran for another seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative George Washington Ray (1844-1925), on March 4, 1885. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served New York's 21st District (Forty-Ninth Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1885, to March 3, 1887. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1886. After his term in the United States Congress had expired he was succeeded in office by the incoming United States Representative and Medal of Honor Recipient John Henry Moffitt (1843-1926), on March 4, 1887. After leaving the United States Congress, he continued with his banking pursuits until his death. He passed away in Glen Falls, New York, on July 17, 1893, and he was buried in Glen Falls Cemetery in Glen Falls, New York. He was married to Harriet Elizabeth Locke Johnson (1837-1914), on September 1, 1858, and they had one child together, a son named Albert Cheney Johnson (1871-1916). His wife Harriet and son Albert are also buried in Glen Falls Cemetery in Glen Falls, New York.
