US Congressman. The son of a prominent land owner and judge, and the brother of Daniel D. Tompkins, who served as Vice President, Caleb Tompkins was educated locally and trained for a legal career. He fought in the American Revolution as a Private in the New York Militia, and was a Captain when he resigned from the militia in 1797. After attaining admission to the bar, he was Scarsdale's first Town Clerk, and served in other local offices including Town Supervisor. An Anti-Federalist who joined the Democratic-Republican Party and later the Democrats, he served as Westchester County Judge from 1807 to 1820. In 1816 he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and served two terms, 1817 to 1821. In 1823 he returned to the position of Westchester County Judge, and he remained on the bench until his death.
