James was the 4th of 6 children (3 sons and 3 daughters) born of Samuel and his 2nd wife, Mary Hall. His father's 1st wife Mary Lamphere died January 1, 1744. James siblings were: Silas (b. 1737), Mary (b. 1738), Samuel (1746-1827), Eunice (1748-1810), John (1749-1810), Mehetable (1753-1832), Hannah (1756-1822), Joseph, Benjamin, and Sarah. His father's 3rd wife, Sarah Blackman died while residing with her daughter, Sarah, in Sheldon, Wyoming County, New York.

In 1776, James enlisted under Captain Bissell of Windham, Windham County, Connecticut where all of his Company resided. James marched with him and his Company to New York where he was engaged in the Battle of White Plains, October 28, 1776. After serving 3 months, he caught a cold by standing on guard, returned home to Windham, and hired and paid a substitute to finish out his term of enlistment.

James married, April 22, 1773, at Windham, Jerusha Lillie, be whom he had 12 children: Elisha (b. 1774), Jerusha (1775-1852), Zeneth (b. 1777), James (1779-1870), Hannah (b. 1784), Lamira (1787-1861), Joel (1786-1857), Daniel (b.1789), lnfant daughter (1789-1789), Abel (b. 1792), Eunice (b. 1795), and Huldah (b. 1797).

In the fall of 1786, James left his wife and little ones with his brother Samuel in Windham, and accompanied his father, Samuel, to Randolph, Orange County, Vermont. He made his home with his father through the winter and after clearing a few acres of land about 3 miles north of his father's, erected a comfortable cabin, and, in the summer returned for his family. But, being that one of his children was sick and unable to travel, he remained in Windham until the following spring and then returned to Randolph.. By the fall of that year, James family consisted of a wife and 6 children.

In the summer 1789, James' wife gave birth to an infant daughter, who died in a few hours.

James children settled in Tunbridge and Williamstown, Orange County, Vermont. His two oldest daughters married, one a Dr. Moxley, and the other a Blodgett, and spent their lives on the farms where they first settled. The rest married and settled in Williamstown, and finally James acceded to their entreaties, sold his farm to his brother, Samuel, and moved there to live with them.
