Governor of West Virginia, Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Born and raised on his mother's family Harrison County, West Virginia farm this Republican politician was successful in the banking and hotel industry, but his first love was agriculture. After graduating from West Virginia University he spent his life in helping the plight of the West Virginia farmer. During WWI He was the assistant food administrator for his home state. From 1924 to 1925 he served as the Secretary of Agriculture in President Calvin Coolidge's cabinet before resigning that position to become West Virginia's governor. As governor he led reform efforts that placed more tax money in the hands of local governments, greatly improved the state's road and highway system and improved the state's agricultural programs. After serving one term, from 1925 to 1929, he returned to Clarksburg where he continued his public service. During the latter years of his life he served as the state's Agriculture Commissioner, developed effective livestock auctions, directed the federal rural rehabilitation program and served on the state's Public Service Commission. He died in Clarksburg. (bio by: Bigwoo)
