Actor, Director. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 16, 1935, to a Russian-Jewish family, he was best known for his work involving the theater. He grew up in Des Moines, Iowa, and attended Drake University, before moving back to New York to pursue an acting career. He also studied at the Herbert Berghof Studio. Chaikin founded the Open Theater in the 1960s, an avant-garde theater company. The theater offered commentary on the Vietnam War to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He disbanded the company in 1973, because it was getting to institulionized. Chaikin worked with playwrights Samuel Beckett and Sam Shepard, and received 5 Obie Awards and 2 Guggenheim Fellowships for his work. He also appeared in the films, "Tongues" (1982), "Savage/Love" (1981), and "Me And My Brother" (1968).
