Walter was the fourth of five children born to Scottish immigrants John T. and Martha (Leitch) Herschell. He is the younger brother of the famous poet William Miller Herschell. He was born in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana and his father worked for the railroad so as a youngster his family moved several times before settling in Princeton, Gibson County, Indiana. Eventually, Walter moved to Arkansas where he married Ethel Roberts. They had two children; Elizabeth and Martha.
