His full name is Dudley Rodolfus Merrill. He was a brother of my great grandfather Roando Merrill.

Died in Lincoln Township. Was a farmer.

He appears as Dudley Merrill in the 1850 census of Broome County, New York, but there is no birth certificate. By 1860 the family was in Isabella County, Michigan and he is listed as Rodolphos Merrill. He then appears in the Isabella County census for 1870 as Dudly) and then as Dudley in the Isabella censuses for 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930. He also appears as Dudley Merrill in his two marriage records (1871 and 1922) and the birth, marriage and death records for his daughter.

By the time of his death, his first wife and both of his children were already deceased, but his second wife Frances was still alive and should have known her husband's correct first name. Somehow both the gravestone and the death certificate have it as Douglas. My guess is that during this time of grief some relative of Frances supplied the information without consulting her.
