U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He studied medicine, was licensed as a physician and went on to serve as a surgeon in the American Revolutionary War. After the war, he was one of the founders and a trustee of the Orange Academy in 1785 and a member of the New Jersey State General Assembly, (1788-89). In 1799, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the Sixth and Seventh Congresses, serving until 1803. He was then appointed as a Democratic Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1803-17). After his term, he was again elected to the Sixteenth Congress in 1817 and served he resigned in 1819. He was appointed assistant Treasury collector of the Port of New York, serving (1819-30).
