During the Civil War, Frank commanded the Marine Guard on the flagship,"USS Black Hawk", which was a large side wheel steamer purchased by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. They served on the Mississippi River. Frank kept a diary during the Red River Expedition which was published as "Civil War Marine: A Diary of the Red River Expedition."
