Joined the Mississippi Marine Brigade during the Civil War in 1862 and served in the United States Marines Mississippi Squadron until 1869. Frank rose to rank of 1st Lieutenant. During the Civil War, Frank commanded the Marine Guard on the flagship,"USS Black Hawk", which was a large side wheel steamer purchased by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. They served on the Mississippi River. Frank kept a diary during the Red River Expedition which was published as "Civil War Marine: A Diary of the Red River Expedition."
