U.S. Senator. He graduated from Yale College in 1757, studied law, admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in New York City. He was a member of the Committee of Correspondence 1774 and a puisne justice of the Supreme Court, (1777-98). He was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Federalist in 1798 to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Philip Schuyler and served from January 11 to April 16, 1798, when he resigned. He was then appointed as judge of the United States District Court of New York and served until his death.
