U.S. Continental Congressman. He was a successful fur trader businessman and served as a New York Colonial Official. He was a member of the First Provincial Congress in 1775, judge of Albany County, (1774-75) and served as commissary of stores and provisions for the Department of New York, (1775-76). He also was deputy commissary general of the northern department, (1775-76), a member of the New York State Assembly, (1777-79) and a member of the New York and Massachusetts Boundary Commission in 1784. In 1784, he was elected a member of the Continental Congress, serving until 1785. After leaving Congress, he was appointed Commissioner of the United States Treasury, in 1785 and served as a member on the board of regents of the University of the State of New York.
