U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union College, in 1810, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced to practice law in Canajoharie, New York. He was prosecuting attorney for Montgomery County, (1818-21) and elected as a Republican to the Seventeenth Congress, serving (1821-23). After his term, he was appointed United States district judge for the northern district of New York, serving (1825-52). He was then appointed United States Minister to Mexico, serving (1852-53). Upon his return from Mexico, he practiced law in Nebraska, returned to New York, in 1861 and pursued literary endeavors until his death at age 84.
