U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale College in 1799, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1804 and commenced to practice law in Hamilton, New York. He was surrogate of Madison County, (1806-16), presidential elector on the Clinton and Ingersoll ticket in 1812 and district attorney of the sixth district Madison County, (1816-21). In 1817, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifteenth Congress, serving until 1919 and elected to the Seventeenth Congress, serving (1821-23). After leaving Congress, he was appointed the first clerk of the Court of Chancery of Oneida County, in 1823 and clerk of the Supreme Court, (1825-35). He also was one of the founders of Hamilton College, Hamilton Academy, served as a trustee of Utica Academy and presidential elector on the Democratic ticket, (1844, 52).
