U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Albany Law School, in 1904, he was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Albany, New York. He was a member of the New York State Senate, (1923-36). In 1937, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses serving until his death from a cerebral hemorrhage at age 75.
