Robert was born to Rebecca Hoopengardner (from Pennsylvania) and Orson Wells Reed. He went by the nicknames "Alvah" and "Dutch". He married Hazel Iolene Savage from Lawrence County Ohio. They had four children, Claudine, Forest, Janice and Robert. He worked 1917 - 1918 at Lawrence Furnace in Lawrence County, Ohio. Dutch and Hazel returned to Toledo, where they had lived previously, and he took a job at the Willys-Overland automotive plant (now the Jeep factory). This was during the Spanish flu epidemic. He contracted the flu and was hospitalized in late October, and died two weeks later. His youngest son Robert "Bob" was born a few days prior to his death. Hazel soon caught the flu and also died on November 16, 1918. (Please Note: My paternal grandparents Alvah and Hazel's headstones have the wrong year of death, it was in 1918, taken from their death certificates and I plan to have the dates corrected.)
