U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Transylvania University in 1823, he studied law at Mount Sterling Law School, was admitted to the bar, practiced law in Mount Sterling, Kentucky and engaged in the manufacture of iron. He was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives (1839, 44) and served in the Texas Rangers, under General Taylor, during the war with Mexico (1846-47). After the war, he served again in the Kentucky House of Representatives, in 1848 and was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving 1849-53. In 1857, he was elected to the Thirty-fifth Congress, serving until 1859. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1860. During the Civil War, he served with Texas State Confederate troops.
