He married Elizabeth A. Finefrock and fathered Elmira (b. @1838). Charles Edwin (08/14/39 - 87th Pa), Johnston Hastings Jr. (b. 08/04/41 - 87th Pa), Sarah & Daniel Alexander (b. 12/16/44), John E. (b. @1848), Michael H. (b. 02/03/49, d. 05/28/55), George (b. @1850), Ada Elizabeth (b. 09/10/52, d. 01/05/59) and Anna M. (b. @1856). In 1860, he was a tailor living in Gettysburg, Adams County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 7" tall with gray hair and hazel eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he first enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 26, 1861, as a private with Co. K, 10th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 31, 1861. He then enlisted in Gettysburg September 29, 1861, understating his age by five years, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 5 as a musician with Co. K, 101st Pennsylvania Infantry. He was hospitalized at Newport News, Virginia, ca. March 1862, and as of August 18, 1862, is listed as "absent without leave." He discharged the service by surgeon's certificate at Harrison's Landing, Virginia, to date July 11, 1862, by reason of "old age and rheumatic affliction of his back."

In 1890, lived in Gettysburg where he is best remembered as the father of Johnston Hastings Skelly, Jr.
