Presidential Cabinet Secretary. After being admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1817, he established a legal practice with future United States President Martin Van Buren in Albany, New York. He was appointed United States Attorney General by President Andrew Jackson in 1833 and continued in office under President Van Buren, serving to 1838. At the same time he served as Attorney General, he also served as Secretary of War under President Jackson, from 1836 to 1837. He later declined President James K. Polk's appointment as Secretary of War, instead serving as United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York (1838 to 1841 and 1845 to 1848). He died in Paris, France while touring Europe.
